New year's makes us think of resolutions, and we usually make many that we can't keep. Resolutions that my husband and I made were to spend new year's eve with good friends, drink champagne at midnight, and have scrambled eggs and truffles for breakfast on new year's day. And so far we've kept them for over 25 years. Who said resolutions had to be hard to keep?
I like the idea of traditions around special days of the year, something. Christmas doesn't really work like that for us, but new year's does. We spend new year's day watching old black and white movies that are holiday themed. Our favourite is The Thin Man with William Powell and Myrna Loy. It is impossible to watch it without a cocktail in your hand. And even though we know the story by heart, it always charms. Powell and Loy had an obvious chemistry, portraying a couple who like to have fun, and dialogue is witty and sophisticated. I think we both fancy ourselves as a witty and sophisticated couple just like them. I can't remember the last time I wore a dress, but Loy's outfits, which are fabulous, tempt me. The other movie we always watch is Holiday Inn, don't let anyone tell you that White Christmas is better it's not. Holiday Inn is more fun thanks to Fred Astaire and his dancing, especially when he dances drunk. Again the dialogue is witty and there's drinking, are you seeing a theme here?
This year I resolved to try and blog once a week, so we'll see how good I am keeping resolutions that don't involve eating or drinking.

I have been a Thin Man fan since childhood. Even read the book. I like your New Year's tradition!
Glad to discover so many Thin Man fans out there.
Love the Thin Man movies, and love your books and blog, Jennifer. And love those terriers, too! (Here's a blog post I did recently about The Thin Man, Asta, and our terrier mix pooch: http://custardandclues.blogspot.com/2012/09/best-not-to-eat-clue.html ).
Happy new year, and here's to fat, truffles, Martinis, and terriers!
Thanks Leslie and thanks for the link. There are a lot of Thin Man fans out there, which is good news. Wishing you lots of fat, truffles, martinis and perhaps just one special terrier in 2013.
If only I could teach our terrier to sniff out truffles. But she would surely eat them upon discovery. Smart dog.
Hmm, good job! This is really something!
